In class our topic is 'Chemical Change'. Jonathan, Gus, Zeb and William did the Coke'n'Mentos experiment.
How to do this:
Put mint Mentos in a full Diet Coke bottle.
Screw cap on... Fast!!!
Shake up the bottle
Place on the ground
Unscrew the cap.
Watch in amazement.
Why this happens:
In the Diet Coke there is caffeine, potassium benzoate, aspartame and CO2 Gas. In the Mentos there is gelatine and gum arabic ingredients. All the chemicals contribute to the 'Jet Effect', causing a Coke geyser.
Make sure you have parental supervision when attempting this experiment.
The eruption can reach higher heights than our one in this video!

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, how dare you waste all that precious diet coke. Me and Room 13 were shocked at the deliberate waste of Andrea's favourite drink !
After we got over the shock we talked about your experiment:
We thought your geyser was impressive as we have never seen it before. What do you think worked and what do you think didn't work in your experiment?

ReplyDelete@the boys: obviously there was a chemical reaction that forced the two original items (the mentos and the coke) to change....but what caused it? What was reacting to what? Your reading group can research this tomorrow....

Well done Boys on your attempt at this experiment. We thought maybe you could try a smaller bottle of coke? We also saw an experiment like yours where the boys put the mentos in the bottle, shook it up and threw it on a hard court. The bottle rocketed into the air. Our seniors have tried that experiment to but they had to carry it out on the school field.

ReplyDeleteI'm John Henderson, Ruth J-P's step-dad and I just want to tell the class how impressed I am with your rememberance of your World War Two family members by dressing up in uniforms & clothing from those long ago days. All of you looked like real people from 70 years ago!!
