Ferdinand Magellan

Ferdinand Magellan was born in Trás-os-Moutes e Alto Douro Portugal, 1480. He died at the age of 40-41 on April 27, in Mactan, Philippines. He had only completed half of his epic voyage around the world. Not only was Ferdinand known for that but sailed the first voyage from Europe to Asia using the West route, rounding the south of the Americas and also being the first to cross the Pacific. He also sailed for King Charles 1 of Spain when searching for a west route to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia known as the Spice Islands in his day. Unfortunately when passing the Philippines he was killed in the brutal Battle of Mactan.
However sixteen months later one of his ships arrived in Spain. On board were 18 survivors who had just sailed around the world.
