Jack's Inquiry Learning

For last few weeks in room11 we have been doing our inquiry projects. First we all choose a subject related to the human body and choose a good way to present our learning in our own unique ways. I came up with the idea for making a stop motion and because of my love for Lego I thought it would be a good way present my learning. The subject I choose was death and dying, so I looked around to see what I could find out about it. Once I did that I got some of my lego people and use the official Lego stop motion app, once I took my 511 photos I recorded my voice over it. I thought it was very fun and I'm really proud of it and I hope you enjoy it.

The Mummy Project By Mia V

In Room 11 we all did homework projects about Ancient Egypt. I choose to do my project on mummies. We had three weeks. We brought our projects to school one Monday to show every one what we had learnt. We had to present our projects in very creative ways. My project in a box. On the front was a paining of Tutankhamen and when you open it it shows you how mummies were made. Then there are 12 dolls wrapped in bandages and when you pick the mummy up there is the facts. On Friday we put a  comment sheet on our desk next to it was our project and we got to walk around the class and look at all the projects and comment on each others project. Here are the comments I got:

Otto, David-Ray and Maxi's egyptian project

We were given a task to make an ICT presentation on Egypt. It was really hard to choose a interesting topic. Eventually we agreed on how to make a mummy. We found out some very interesting facts such as they covered the body in natron salt (hydrated soda ash) and they tied the toenails and finger nails so they don't fall off and get lost in the salt. Here is our finished result hope you enjoy.

My Homework Project

In room 11 we all did a homework project about Ancient Egypt. I chose to do my project on Ancient Egyptian fashion and beauty. We had to do it in three weeks. We brought our projects to school to show everyone what we learnt. We all presented our work in a very unique and creative way. I presented my work as a life sized dress and wrote all of my facts on the flaps that were on my dress. When we shared our projects we put a comment sheet on our desk next to it and we would walk around the classroom and comment on each other's project. I got six comments and those six comments were:

-Hi Olivia, your project was well presented and the facts were interesting. From Emma.

-Livi, your dress is a very, very cool way to present your facts on Egypt's fashion. With the flaps you can open it makes the dress stand out. Well done Livi. From Jennifer.

-Hi Olivia, very smart idea. You have thought outside the box. From Anton.

-Hi Olivia, I love the way you presented you project, it looks amazing. From Annabella.

-Olivia, you have done some excellent research into Egyptian clothes and makeup. Well done. From Ruth.

Egypt Medicine By Madeline

A few weeks ago, Room 11 were given a homework project about Egypt. We needed to find information on a topic about Egypt, in 3 weeks. Some people had chosen topics like, Mummies, Pyramids, Fashion, Egyptian gods etc. My topic was, ' Egyptian Medicine.'
I displayed it in two ways. The first way, was displayed like flyers. I had three main topics in the one flyer. The first topic was, " Weird Remedies." Second, was, " 'A' Jar ",  Which was a home remedy for cuts, and grazes. And my last was, " Interesting.." Which was the most interesting remedies, in Egypt.
All the flyers were displayed in a flyer display (which I borrowed from my auntie).
The second way I displayed my learning was, a taste tester. As seen in the first picture, I had a crystal cup-thingy, filled with, a red substance. Which was a replica of bats blood. In egypt, the acient Egyptians thought that Bats blood would cure your eyesight, because bats have good eyesight. I have no idea why they used the blood though. The 'Batsblod' was actually, water, with red food colouring, and a bit if jelly crystals, to make the water thicker. And it really only tasted like really waterey juice!

Emma and Ruby's Egyptian project

In our reading group, the Sentence Spies, we have been researching about Egypt in books from the library. We learnt things we never knew. For example Egyptians gave giraffe and zebras tails for presents. It was really fun because we got to know each other more even though it took a long time. We both got to see each others angry side.

Egyptian homework By Jaime

Hi people.

Today im going to tell you about my homework and how I made it.
Firstily I had to pick an Egyptian topic out of:
writing
magic + medicine
fashion [clothes]
people
pyramids

And lots more topics.

I picked writing the reason why I picked writing was because it is interesting and weird.
When I got home...I did not do my home work. The next day I did not do my homework. The next day I did not not do my homework and so on.
"MUM MY HOMEWORK HAS TO BE HANDED IN 3 DAYS AND I HAVE ONLY DONE MY PLAN!!!!!!!!!"
My mum replied saying, "Then hurry up". I rushed over to the computer and started typing to make my question cards.
Then my dad told me that he had finished making my pyramid. "YES!" I said to myself.
Finally it was finished I printed out my question cards and put them in a little bag.

Now I'm going to tell you how my homework works. It is a board game and this is the aim of the game: first one to the top. If you land on a green spot you have to answer one of the quistion cards if you get it wrong you have to go back to the closest coner but if you get it correct you roll again.

What's your sentence? By Jennifer

We were fascinated by a school that had students write sentences that summed up their lives and the type of person they wish to be. Their sentences were interesting, motivating and fabulous. We decided to write our own sentences that summed up the type of person we want to be. We thought about what we what to define us and what we want to be remembered for. We think you will be impressed!

We hope you enjoy the slideshow.

Our Dances by Willie

On Thursday when we went to the Art Gallery we created a dance based on the big flower sculpture in the atrium of the gallery. We created movement like the flowers. We also made our bodies into the string and metal holding up the flowers. We had to perform for some dancers and our teachers. It was really fun. We learnt lots of skills about dancing. Dancing doesn't always need music to tell a story. Dancing can also tell you stories. By Willie

Dance Workshops at the Auckland Art Gallery by Olivia

On Thursday we went to the Auckland Art Gallery for a dance workshop. The year 6's from room 11 and room 13 went. We walked around the gallery and watched dancers perform a routine about artworks in the gallery. We found out that you don't have to have music to dance to. We also made two dance performances. We had a great time there, we have learnt a lot about dancing and using different levels with our bodies.

Bon Voyage Maia!

On Friday, we had a french party, to say goodbye to Maia, who was going to live in France on Sunday. We all had to dress up like we were french people. Every single person had a moustache, either drawn on (by Madeline, Salote, and Jennifer) or stuck-on.
We had an awesome shared lunch, that included grapes, cake, cookies, drinks, marshmallows as well as French food like brie and crackers, pain au chocolate and friands. Everyone had fun, but were sad to see Maia go. We will always remember, her talent to spell ANYTHING, her love for rats, her amazing stories and her giggles.

Dance Workshop

On Thursday 9th Sarah from the NICAI/AAG Dance project and a companion came into Room 11 to do a dance workshop.
Firstly we did some warm ups so we didn't pull or strain a muscle. Then we had to make an object in our class room using our bodies.
Next we got in to groups of mainly 8 or 9. Then Sarah told us to make objects in the class room with our groups. We made objects like book shelves, hibiscus flowers and playgrounds.
Then Sarah asked us what have we done in the class room. We said we have been learning about John Pule and have been using his artwork as inspiration. We told her that he had come in to our class room and taught us how to put words into pictures.
Then we told Sarah the poem we used:

I know of a shore
glistening in the islands where the sun,
resplendent in clouds
also ripples upon the sensuous sands.

We then choose about 5 or 6 words in the poem e.g shore, glistening, islands etc. All the groups chose their five words and had to make the word into a image using their bodies.
After a few minutes we all showed what we had done with the words that we chose from the poem.
We performed our words to music.

Egypt By Emma

In Room 11 we have been learning about Egypt because that is what we're doing for the production.

Cleopatra was the last Ancient Egyptian pharaoh. Cleopatra married Ptolemy XIII he was the brother, husband and second cousin to Cleopatra!
She also married Ptolemy XII who was father, uncle, great uncle, father in law and husband to Cleopatra.
The first female pharaoh called Hatsheput wore male clothes and wore a beard. Pharaohs were buried inside a pyramid. Cleopatra also married her 12 year old brother. Weird!

John Pule by Maia and Madeline

Yesterday morning a well known artist, John Pule, came to our class. He gave a little talk and we learnt some interesting things, including how to translate words into pictures. After writing this poem-

I know of a shore
glistening in the islands where the sun,
resplendent in clouds
also ripples upon the sensuous sands.

-on the board, he asked us to turn the words 'know', 'shore', 'glistening', 'islands', 'sun', 'resplendent', 'clouds, 'ripples', 'sensuous', and 'sands' into pictures. We had only ten minutes but we got through alright. John Pule also talked a little bit about himself. Apparently he won a drawing competition when he was at primary school and the prize was $40 and a bank account! He also has a fifteen year old son and four-going-on-five year old daughter who will attend Grey Lynn school. By Maia and Madeline

100 Days of Learning By Hugo and Max J

On the 100th day of school we celebrate our learning and successes. Our mums, dads and special visitors are invited to come in and look at our work. We also go  into different classes and visit your siblings. Our parents like looking at our nice work.  We also bring canned food in and see how many we can get. Our aim is always 100 or more. We donate the cans to the Auckland City Mission. Here are out photos of today:

The Taste of Freedom by Sasha

As I climbed onto the horse's back he swayed slightly then stopped abruptly as if trying to tell me how a horse should act when someone is mounting them. I gazed down at the steep hill. I longed to canter down but I had strict instructions to walk.

"Steady now Harley," I whispered. He looked at me almost in a way that he understood. I could see tall oaks on the edge of the huge green fields. I smelt the sweet smell of dewy grass. I could hear the other horses whinnying, longing to be ridden. I could taste the taste of freedom.

The Fearfall at Rainbow's End by Mia V

I could feel the bar as I gripped it tight holding on for my life. I could hear my mum screaming. All I could see was the darkness of my eyes shut tight. All I was thinking was I can't wait till its over. Then we got to the end and it was all over and I felt sick.
"I'm never doing that again in my life," I said.

Pancakes for dinner by Jaime

I cut it into pieces and stabbed my fork into it. I could taste them, covered with maple syrup, sliding down my throat and hear my family gobbling them up. I could feel my cold knife and fork in my hands and see them cutting my meal into pieces. I could smell my favourite food sizzling in the pan and they are pancakes.

Roasting Marshmallows By Briar

I looked up at the night sky. A limitless world beyond time it seemed. It was a cloudless night and I could see the milky way. It wandered between and trampled over the stars which were shining brighter than I've seen before. The wind hurled its self at my back. I shivered. THUNK! Somebody heaped another piece of wood on the fire. The fire crackled and spluttered indignantly. I pulled my marshmallow out of the fire. It was almost dripping off the stick. I couldn't wait to indulge in that sweet, sugary, warm, delicious taste again. I felt around my mouth. I could still taste the salty remains of the fish 'n chips we'd had for dinner. I let it cool of while I softly sang to my dad's guitar.
It was possibly the best, most peaceful night of my life.

By Briar

Luge Crash by Matt W

When I crashed into the sand bank on the luge I could see my luge cart bewilderd with sand. In the background I could see the trees briskly waving about. I tasted the salty, crunchy sand that had been flung into my mouth. I could hear the rattling of other luge carts as they hurled past me. I could smell nothing for my nose was blocked. I could feel my hands losing grip of the handles as I was hurtled forward as a cluster of sand was thrown at me and on to my helmet. It started seeping though.
By Matt W

Snap-shot of the movies By Jennifer

The lights dimmed as I sat in my seat holding a bag full of popcorn. I could mell the buttery essence, smoking towards my nose. Looking straight ahead I could see the big screen shining towards my face. My taste buds sizzled, popped, banged because of the buttercup coloured popcorn. My ears adjusted towards the speakers because of the splash of raindrops banging, splashing the ground. With the palm of my hand gripping the arm of my seat I could suddenly feel my sisters fear. Shaking, nonstop.

Horse Riding by Celia

The horse shuddered as I slid into the saddle head up, back straight holding onto the reins. As I sat up there I felt tall and I could see for miles. On the immense hills the grass swayed in the wind and the rickety fence a jar open just wanting some company. I could smell the pines prickly smell as it tickled the end of my nose. I could feel the silky brown coat of the horse and the mane sliding between my fingers. The horse glided through the deep mud mud oozing out of the shoe. I felt free as the breeze tickled my cheeks and the grass swept a path for us. The pines among us seemed to silently whisper to each other and turn as we passed them. Pines cones were crunching beneath our feet as we trotted over the hill on our journey.

Glow Worms in Caves By Amy

WALT: write descriptions

A dark cave, a metal boat, me and a few other people amazed at the sight of gorgeous little worms the size of my fingernail with glimmering glowing blue tummies. The different stripy rock formations made the ceiling of the cave look like it had zebra stripes. A salty fresh taste immediately appeared in the presents of my mouth. The smell of damp rock from a trickling waterfall flowed through my nose. I lay my arm back and ZING, the coldness of the metal swirled through my blood. I was breathing fresh and pure oxygen. The air around me was nippy but I was too amazed to notice, the glow worms fishing lines were like very thin chains that sparkled in the shining light from the guides head-torch. Echos from the waterfall sounded like a volcanic eruption with pouring hot lava from the tip. The guide took us back and told us to go back up the cave and out, there were so many different rock formations stripy, swirly even ones that came out of the ground. We walked out of the caves with light streaming in. I will always remember the glow worms and their webs and everything else in the Waitomo Caves.

Standing on a Frozen Lake

Camp Food by Matt W

When the Year 6s of Grey Lynn School went to Camp Bentzon Selwyn the cook came with us. Selwyn was a great cook.  For breakfast he woke up early and made nice warm rolls. For dinner he did the same except he put butter in them. On Monday when got there we had our own lunch, for dinner we had shepard's pie and dessert was banana split but we got to choose what you had in it. On Tuesday we woke up and had cereal, fruit, rolls and baked beans or spaghetti. For lunch we had pizza and dinner was roast chicken and peaches and custard for dessert. Camp food was great!

We all had a lot of fun and all the activities were really good. We did kayaking, fishing, hut building, sailing, the confidence course, burma rope, raft building, camp cooking and orienteering.
My favourite activity was hut building because it was something I had never done and it involved a lot of team work and I really enjoyed it.

Cabins at camp. By Olivia

Cabins at camp.

At camp we all got to share a cabin with our friends. I shared my cabin with Madeline, Salote, Christina  and Langi. Our cabin was next to Ruth's. She put us next to her for a reason! Our cabin was the craziest and the LOUDEST cabin in the girls hallway. The hardest thing in the cabins that we had to do was to get to sleep. Every night it took me at least 1 hour to go to sleep because everyone was talking. One night we were so loud Ruth had to come in to our cabin and she had to sit on the ground to wait for us to go to sleep (it was really, really awkward). On the last day everyone's cabins were so messy because we had all of our dirty clothes, towels, wetsuits and our day bags on our bed.
Despite all of this it was really fun sharing a cabin with the girls because we had a lot of fun dancing in our pjs and laughing together.

Katz 1 by Anton

On Monday the 11th of June all the Year Six kids went to Camp Bentzon. Monday it was nice and sunny and that was good because the first rotation was fishing!

On Tuesday we did the burma trail. It was hard because you were blindfolded and you had to follow a rope. The rope went under, around and over things like trees and branches.

On Wednesday we went on a hike to Mansion House. We had a great cook who was Selwyn. He made buns for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Here is a photo of the group Katz 1: me, Jack, Salote, Jennifer, Amy, Phoenix and Sydnie. Our parent were Kelvin and Bo. They were amazing!!!

The A-Z of Children's Rights by Eva and Ruby

In Room 11 we have been doing Social Studies. We have also been focusing on Children's Rights. Ruth put together a hopscotch of activities using Bloom's Taxonomy. We chose to do an A-Z of children's rights slide. Everything that a child needs was put into a sideshow made by Ruby and Eva. We made our own music on Garageband.
As well as having fun we learnt a lot. We hope you enjoy the slide show!

How the Moon got its Craters by Cameron

For English we had an option of nine activities based on Bloom's Taxonomy. I decided to do this activity:
Write a new creation myth in a country of your choice. Share as an animation/film strip/story board /play/poem. Here is what I came up with, I did the moon instead of a country.

SCAMPER by Maxi

In Room 11 we have been doing a English and social studies hopscotch using Bloom's Taxonomy. My task was use SCAMPER to improve a mythical character. I did a Griffin. A Griffin is a mythical character which is a hawk and lion combined. SCAMPER is a creative thinking tool. S stands for substitute, C is combine, A is adapt, M is magnify modify and minify, P is put to another uses, E is eliminate, R is reverse. Hope you enjoy my slide show.

Kurta by Emma, Mia M and Eva

The Task was to make a national costume of any third world country. We decided to do a Kurta which is from India. A Kurta is a flexible dress that can be worn as a formal dress or an every day dress. A Kurta can be a man's outfit or a woman's outfit. A Kurta is usually long sleeved. A Kurta is brightly coloured so it is easy to see at a special occasion. A man's Kurta is a long sleeved t-shirt with baggy pants. The Kurta is not always worn with shoes. It is mostly worn with a scarf that matches the pants. A Kurta usually has a veil to make the back of the Kurta not as plain. The Kurta was made by Mia M. The research was done by Emma and Eva.

Raninui Brand Slippers By Jennifer

Did you know Nike shoes are named after the greek godess of victory? In one of the boxes in room 11's hopscotch for this year it says to invent your own product and name it after a mythological or legendary figure and to keep in mind that the brand name needs to go with the product.
My product I have made is Rangiui brand slippers.I chose the mythological name Ranginui beacause he is the sky father. When the rain pours down on these slippers the slippers will stay dry and warm in the inside and will be wet and soaked on the outside. This product is made of elastic and fluff. These slippers are washable.

The Arctic Ocean Happy-Headed Jelly-Fish-Bear by Amy

The Arctic Ocean Happy-Headed Jelly-Fish-Bear also known as the Jelly-Fish-Bear is a very interesting animal because it is half mammal and half jelly-fish. It is related to the bear/polar bear family and elephant family.

The Jelly-Fish-Bear has an elephant head and has creamy white fluffy ears. It has a polar bear body but it has big black spots. The tentacles are bright red from all the blood rushing to them to keep them warm. This is important because they live in a hole in the ice and they put their tentacles in the icy water.

Ice floes in the Arctic Ocean are the main habitat of the Jelly-Fish-Bear.When it gets frostbite (quite often) it shakes until it warms up (it normally takes five mins). When it gets scared it turns white (like the ice) to camouflage itself. It is born 7mm long and the full/average size is 7cm ( the biggest humans have found is 8.7cm).

Fish eggs are the Jelly-Fish-Bears main diet. It is a very small eater, and only eats once a day. If it can it sometimes eats fish that have just hatched from the eggs (very occasionally).

The Jelly-Fish-Bear has live babies. They are born purple in litters of 10. They are first born with gills and after about one week it breaks through the ice and the gills turn into little pink lines.

73 years and 14 days is the exact length of their life (unless they have been eaten). Every month they give birth to a litter so they are not endangered. They stay with their Mum for about five years or until they can defend themselves from predators.

Hammerhead sharks and whales are their predators. When they sense the Jelly-Fish-Bears predators they turn white (like ice). They do not harm anything bigger than them except fish eggs and baby fish.

The Arctic Ocean Happy- Headed Jelly- Fish-Bear is a very small animal which does not harm except to catch food. It is an intelligent animal and humans have figured out they are not a pest to anything.

This animal loves shiny things such as coins, jewellery and shiny metal. It also likes rotten things.

The Giant-Footed African Dog By Mia V

The Giant Footed African dog is related to the brown bear there are ten of them left in the world. They are very endangered.

The African dog is a mammal that feeds on wetas and frogs legs. The African dog is about 12 cm small but its feet are 8cm wide.

The African dog has big green and purple eyes a orange body with black spots and yellow claws it has scales and weighs 8 kg.

When a creature tries to get or eat the African dog they stick out their claws and scratch them.

When the African dog has a baby the girls come out in some sticky liquid but the boys come out in a small egg shell. The egg shell has all kinds’s of coloured spots this is because that is how the adults can tell what to call it. So if the egg shell had green and red spots the mum will call him the big footed greed and red spotted african dog .

The boys can live up to 70 years old but the girls can live up to 100 years of age.

The Giant-footed African dog is a creature that does not like other creatures. In 2012 their numbers dropped so there are only 10 left in the world .

The Cat Faced Two-Legged Humbug by Jennifer

The Cat Faced Two-Legged Humbug is a rare and endangered mammal. With under two thousand of these left in the Sri Lankan rainforest it’s life is changing and in danger.

The Cat Faced Two-Legged Humbug is the most intelligent, most creative creature there is in the rainforest. In fact its face is Cat-like with oval eyes and delicate ears, cat facial details. Its body all the way down to the waist is like a Dinosaur’s. With their sharp claws they can check if their prey is dead or is still alive. It digs with them too. The bottom part of it’s body is like a Tiger. To run fast they use their paws.

The Humbug can weigh about 5 kgs and is about 14 centimeters long when it is a baby. When its an adult it weighs double that! When the female has babies, they are born live. They are as green as the grass and scaly with wings. The mother should have up to sixteen babies at a time. The babies nest is made of bark and mud.The female has to rest on it plus push to get the babies out. However, the male doesn’t do anything but guards the babies when the mother goes hunting.

The Humbug eats animals that live under ground. Such as Worms and Moles. To drink they have to drink mud. It’s got protein to make hem fit and healthy.

To hunt and get food the Humbug uses it’s excellent hum. It can hear the slightest movement even from the quietest worm. To get their prey they dig with their Dinosaur-like claws. To help get the prey that they want the Humbug must hum to make them fall asleep. They then stand and squish them till their flesh comes out. After, the female eats her share and the rest of the family eat to get stronger and stronger. If the female doesn’t catch anything, then she and her family will starve.

The Cat Faced Two-Legged Humbug lives in the Sri Lankan rainforest.Among the leaves they take shelter and it’s their home for safety. They make sure the leaves have no harmful bacteria that will cause the babies to die.

The Cat Faced Two-Legged Humbug survives by using it’s feet.Their Tiger-like feet can run a mile in 400 mili seconds. That is the fastest animal in the rainforest. Native tribes in the rainforest feast on Humbugs to celebrate the rainforest’s anniversary. Luckily the Humbug can run really fast and avoid being caught.

The Humbug has two relatives. The Cow-spotted Quaver and the Ring-Necked Memble Fud. They are rare indeed. To communicate they meet in the exact middle of the rainforest. They all use sign language. Some scientists say that they don’t communicate that way,but they communicate by howling like a Wolf.

The Humbug runs fast to keep away from enimies and has about 16 babies at a time. The female has to make and do everything for her family.
