Be Yourself By room 11

In room 11 we have created a list of good ways to be noticed and bad ways to be noticed. In table groups we discussed the good and bad ways. After that we summarized the things that we wrote and put it into a chart. Here are some of our ideas about the good and bad ways to be noticed.

  1. Hi Room 11

This is excellent work. Taking a pro-social perspective is such a better way of dealing with issues than working in a deficit model. Creating a climate of respect is a rather difficult undertaking and when reached needs to be preserved. It doesn't take much for a positive classroom to be eroded away by behaviours you have sited in your column on Bad Ways To Be Noticed. These behaviours can effect every body.

Perhaps, with your permission, we can pick up on what you are saying here and adopt a school wide approach. What sort of actions or activities would you implement across the school to encourage pro-social behaviours????

I would be interested in your response to this question.

    1. Hi Mr Barker,

We had a quick discussion about this and here are some of the things we came up with:

      - Star of the week at assembly for children getting noticed in the right way (from each team/class), they could get a little prize
      - Students acknowledging each other
      - Year 6's giving stickers for little kids getting noticed in the right way
      - Caught being Good at lunchtime
      - Have a room that is the OPPOSITE of the Quiet Room and children doing the right thing are allowed to go there (maybe get given a tag)
      - Students can vote for each other, be rewarded at assembly

We'll let you know when we think of some more!

    2. Room 11 thank you for replying to my message. You have given me some good ideas that I will try. But first I will acknowledge your work at this weeks assembly and I will inject some of your ideas there after. Keep the ideas flowing by using de Bono's thinking hats perhaps. Again thanks for your reply here.

  2. Talofa Room 11 and that is a tall order that Mr Barker has asked you in his response. I will keep reading to find out what comes of it.
Regarding your post, kids that I respect show the 3 R's in their every day life....not just in the classroom or at school but in their home life and social circle of friends what ever the situation. Being good a listening to what is said and then take time to think about what is said is another good way to be noticed. How ever it does take time and it STARTS with the little things......like being true to your self and when you speak you speak words of life of those around you . Am loving the good list but some times the things on the bad list can be done without you really knowing you are being negative. Wow you are really making me think. Keep up the interesting work Room 11.

  3. Kia ora Room 11,

You have obviously been thinking hard about what it means to 'Be Yourself' - it sounds easy but it can be really challenging at times. I agree with Otalani start with little things - notice the positive things other people are doing, engage your ears and your hearts.

There's a cliche' my parents used to tell my siblings and I at your age (we would always roll our eyes at the time) that I now believe " You get what you give."

    Good luck Room 11.

  4. Hi Room 11,

I totally agree with your points on good ways to be noticed and the bad ways. They are a very good thing to put on a blog well done.
